Lighted Glass Block

Lighted Glass Block
This is a simple and beautiful project.

Rated -- Easy for beginners.

You’ll need:

Materials List:
  • 1 glass block
  • 1 string of holiday lights
  • 1 Florist’s pick
  • 1 premade bow or 1 to 1 1/2 yards of ribbon to make your own
  • 1 sheet of stickers or window clings

    Tools List :
    • 1 5/8" diamond core bit
    • 1 drill or drill press

This themed glass block light is easy to make. You only have to drill one hole in the back of the glass block, near the bottom. If you’re using regular incandescent lights instead of LED lights we recommend drilling a second hole higher up on the back of the block for ventilation. Regular incandescent lights put out a lot of heat. You don’t want the block getting too hot.

Drill a 1/2”, 5/8” or 3/4” hole in the back of your wine bottle, near the bottom. A diamond core bit works best. You’ll need a hole large enough for the lights to fit through easily. Usually the smallest hole you can use is ½”. Even then the lights are a tight fit. We prefer to use a slightly larger hole, like the 5/8” bit that we used here.

When drilling with diamond core bits remember to:

    • Use a slow drill speed of 500-800 RPM
    • Use light drill pressure
    • Keep the drill bit and the glass wet

When you order your diamond core bits, you’ll receive a copy of “How To Drill Glass” with your order.

Next, apply the stickers or window clings to the glass block .If you decide to use a different theme, please send us a picture. We would love to see it. You can get these holiday stickers and window clings at almost any hobby store such as Hobby Lobby, Michaels, etc. You can also find them at variety stores such as Walmart or the dollar store.

Then, insert your string of holiday lights inside the glass block until just the “tail” of the light string extends out of the hole. We used a string of 50 lights. We decided to use a glass block with a “rippled” surface texture. Since we’re not painting the block this makes the light cord less visible. In addition we used a light string with a white cord instead of green so that it blended better.

Place it on a table, nightstand or counter. Plug it in.

If you have original artwork, we'd love to feature it (and you) on our website and blog. Please email a short description of what you do, how you do it and a few pictures or video. We can only publish pictures and descriptions of original work.
